Connecticut elected officials held a press conference last week to denounce ICE’s recent surge in the state, following the arrests of four young people at Connecticut airports, one a college freshman trying to take a domestic flight. None had criminal records, and according to Sen. Richard Blumenthal, all had a legal basis to be in the US.
Across the country, federal officers are arresting people who did nothing wrong, holding them in degrading conditions for weeks with no opportunity for bail. Illegal enforcement and constitutional rights violations are now federal policy.
Denouncing this behavior is not enough. To make it stop, Connecticut and other states must start holding the perpetrators responsible, from the policymakers to the arresting officers.
