Stop the Authoritarian Takeover: Pass the Restore the Constitution Act

State and local governments have the power to stop the authoritarian takeover and protect their people. The Restore the Constitution Act is model legislation ready for adoption by any state or local government.

The Act:

• states the nature of the crisis and commits the state or locality to defend its people and work to restore constitutional governance;
• creates a framework for strategic action across jurisdictions, including measures to impede unlawful federal directives, hold accountable the officials who carry them out, and keep RCA cases in state court;
• begins enforcement through a powerful private right of action, a way for people harmed by illegal federal action to sue the responsible federal officials in state court; and
• is built for escalation: additional measures from Democratism's growing Catalog of Legislative Actions can be plugged into the Act to increase pressure on the federal government to return to constitutional governance.

This is not another narrow response to one abuse. It is a new kind of response because we face a new kind of threat: an assault on the whole constitutional order.

Existing state and local responses do not confront the authoritarian power structure driving the crisis. The Restore the Constitution Act does.
